Barchester Towers

|
(1857) The second novel in *Trollope's Barsetshire series, and the outstanding classic of clerical intrigue. A new bishop, Dr Proudie, has arrived in Barchester. He is under the influence of two ambitious but very different characters – his imperious wife and the unctuous Obadiah Slope, his chaplain. At first they are on the same side against the old guard in the Cathedral Close, led by Dr Grantly, but they fall out over who shall have the appointment at Hiram's Hospital left vacant at the end of The *Warden. Slope eventually falls victim to Mrs Proudie's schemes and is dismissed.
