Banqueting House
|
|
(London SW1) The earliest *Palladian structure in Britain to be completed (in 1622), designed by Inigo *Jones for James I. It is also the only surviving building of *Whitehall Palace. The famous ceiling was commissioned by *Charles I from *Rubens in 1630 and depicts the apotheosis of the house of *Stuart in the person of Charles's father, James I. It was from the Banqueting House that Charles stepped out on to a scaffold in Whitehall for his execution in 1649.
