Bankside

(London SE1) The south bank of the Thames, near Southwark Bridge. Its importance historically is that the theatres were here in the time of Shakespeare (they were banned within the boundaries of the city of London, on the north bank, and this was the nearest congenial area). Here were the *Rose, Swan and *Globe, in addition to an arena for *bear baiting. A vast riverside power station by George Gilbert *Scott is the new home for the *Tate's modern collection, known now as Tate Modern.
