Banbury
|
|
(40,000 in 1991) Town in Oxfordshire, famous historically for the quality of its cakes and ale but best known now for its cross, the memory of which is kept alive by the nursery rhyme *'Ride a cockhorse to Banbury cross'. The stone cross stood in the market place, but was destroyed by Puritans in 1602. The present one is a replacement put up in 1858.
