John de Balliol

(also spelt Baliol, c.1250-1314) King of Scotland 1292–6. One of 13 claimants on the death of *Margaret, the Maid of Norway, he was first helped to the throne and then four years later removed from it by the English king, *Edward I, who imprisoned him in the Tower of London. His father, also John de Balliol, was the founder of Balliol College at Oxford. An independent Scottish kingdom was later re-established by *Robert the Bruce (see also the *royal house of Scotland).
