Baconian theory
|
|
The argument that *Shakespeare's plays were written by Francis *Bacon. First appearing in print in the mid-19C, the concept relies largely on the patronizing idea that a man educated at Stratford grammar school could not have written Shakespeare's masterpieces. Supporters have found statements of Bacon's authorship within the plays, concealed in elaborate cryptograms – invariably a minefield of self-delusion for those with theories to prove.
