Baccarat Scandal
|
|
A libel case of 1891, caused by an accusation of cheating at baccarat made against a guest staying at Tranby Croft, the house of a Hull shipowner, Arthur Wilson. It was of interest only because the prince of Wales, the future *Edward VII, was one of the party and gave evidence in the witness box. What chiefly shocked the nation was the amount of money for which the heir to the throne and his apparently dubious friends were in the habit of gambling.
