Aberystwyth

(11,000 in 1991)
Resort on the west coast of Wales, in Dyfed. The medieval town developed round a Norman castle, now a ruin. The first college of the University of Wales was established here in 1872, and the town was chosen in 1907 as the site for the *National Library of Wales. The Ceredigion Museum, housed in a restored Edwardian theatre, uses a collection of domestic and craft objects to recreate the history of the area. The mining of silver and lead played an important part in this, and the nearby Llywernog Silver-Lead Mine Museum includes a restored water-powered mine which was abandoned in the 1880s.
