Important part of 18C social life, being the place in any resort town to which 'polite persons of both sexes' would go in the daytime for 'conversation, gallantry, news, and play' (in the words of a contemporary account), and in the evening for dancing. Two well-known examples survive, at *Bath and in the rooms created by Lord *Burlington in York.
