(1516–68) Schoolmaster who was tutor for two years to the future Elizabeth I, from when she was 15. His book The Schoolmaster, published by his widow in 1570, lays out his liberal ideas on education. He believed that it can only succeed if the child finds it attractive. By the same token he was against *corporal punishment.
