Arundel

(3000 in 1991) Town in West Sussex on the river Arun. It developed on the slope of the hill rising from the river to the Norman castle, established in the late 11C as a stronghold to control much of the south coast. The castle has been inherited within just two related families since the 12C, but its interior is now largely of the 18–19C (including a superb *Gothic Revival library). Since 1672 its owners, the dukes of Norfolk, have been hereditary *Earl Marshals of England.
