Dr Arnold
|
|
(Thomas Arnold, 1795–1842) Headmaster of Rugby from 1827 till his death, and the single most formative influence on the development of the *public schools. He said on his appointment that his object would be to form Christian men ('Christian boys I can scarcely hope to make'), and the resulting emphasis was on the building of character. Arnold was quite plain about his priorities: 'first, religious and moral principles; secondly, gentlemanly conduct; thirdly, intellectual ability'. An idealized portrait of him is given by one of his boys, Thomas Hughes, in *Tom Brown's Schooldays. Matthew *Arnold was his son.
