Armagh
|
|
The name of one of the six *counties of Northern Ireland; also of one of the provinces most ancient towns (14,000 in 1991) and Ireland's ecclesiastical centre. With the reorganization of *local government in 1973 the town of Armagh became a district within the county. Its history goes back to the 5C, when it was chosen by St *Patrick as his headquarters. It is the seat of two archbishops, Roman Catholic and Anglican, each head of his own community in both parts of Ireland and each bearing the title Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland. The Anglican cathedral is of the 18–19C and the Catholic entirely 19C. Secular buildings of the 18C include one by Thomas Cooley housing the Royal School (founded by James I in 1608) and an Observatory which has been in use since 1791.
