Edward Appleton

(1892–1965, KCB 1941) English physicist, awarded the 1947 Nobel prize for his research into the ionosphere. In 1924 he provided the first experimental evidence of the reflecting layer which had been postulated by *Heaviside and Kennelly. He later discovered a higher layer, known for a while as the Appleton layer but now more commonly called the F-layer.
