Animal Farm
|
|
(1945) Satirical fable by George *Orwell on the process and pattern of revolution, particularly as seen in the Soviet Union. The farm animals revolt against the farmer, Mr Jones, and create their own Utopian community with slogans such as 'Four legs good, two legs bad' and 'All animals are equal'. But soon the pigs take control, with a power struggle developing between the ruthless Napoleon (Stalin) and the more idealistic Snowball (Trotsky). The good-natured carthorse, Boxer (the worker), believes everything he is told right up to the moment of his own dispatch to the knacker's yard. By the end Napoleon is living in Mr Jones's house and the slogans have been mysteriously transformed into 'Four legs good, two legs better' and 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others'.
