Anglo-Saxon kingdoms
|
|
The *Anglo-Saxons had by the 8C divided England into seven large and reasonably stable kingdoms known as the Heptarchy ('rule by seven' in Greek). The four smallest (Sussex, Kent, Essex and East Anglia) corresponded roughly to the areas still known by those names. The others were *Wessex, *Mercia and *Northumbria. The eastern kingdoms were conquered in the 9C by the *Danes.
