Angles

One of the three main Germanic tribes which together became known as the *Anglo-Saxons. They came from northwest Europe, possibly from the modern German region of Schleswig which still contains a district called Angeln. During the 5–6C they invaded and settled the entire eastern coast from East Anglia to Northumberland. Although they were only one part of the tribal mix in the country at that time, the words England and English derive from their name.
