Elizabeth Garrett Anderson
|
|
(Elizabeth Garrett, 1836–1917, m. James Anderson 1871) Pioneer female physician. She overcame numerous obstacles in her unorthodox determination to qualify as a doctor, and her crusading energies found a perfect cause in establishing the New Hospital for Women in London's Euston Road. Here, for the first time, women could receive medical attention from their own sex. The year after her death it was renamed the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. In 1908 she made history of a different kind, becoming England's first woman mayor when elected to that office in Aldeburgh.
