Alnwick

(7000 in 1991)
Town in Northumberland, on the river Aln, which has grown up round a Norman stronghold controlling the eastern coastal route to Scotland. Alnwick Castle has been the home since the 14C of the Percy family, one of whom was Harry Hotspur (see *Henry IV, Part 1). Its interior, frequently altered, is notable now for some superb Victorian rooms and a fine collection of paintings.
