Edward Alleyn

(1566–1626) One of the first two great English actors. Performing with the *Admiral's Men, he created the leading roles in the plays of Marlowe while his rival, Richard *Burbage, was associated with Shakespeare. Alleyn owned several theatres, including the *Rose. He used his wealth to found *Dulwich College.
