Abbotsford

(52km/32m SE of Edinburgh)
House built and largely designed by Walter *Scott in 1812–24 on the river Tweed. The Victorian-medieval style of the architecture, comfortably romantic and rich in detail, is in keeping with the great appeal at the time of his novels. With his possessions still in place, the house is today a most evocative memorial.
