(16km/10m SW of Dorchester) Village near the Dorset coast with several claims to fame. The great tithe barn survives from a Benedictine monastery, as does the swannery, where hundreds of pairs nest every spring. The gardens contain many tender plants seldom grown elsewhere in Britain out of doors. And the traditional start of the mackerel season is still marked each May by an ancient ceremony in which garlands, blessed in the church, are thrown into the sea.
