Until 1974 the highest rank in local government after the mayor; aldermen, like mayors, were elected by their fellow councillors. The word is Anglo-Saxon, synonymous with 'elder'. The office was abolished in the Local Government Act of 1972 (effective from 1974), and it now survives only in the *City of London.
