(1819–61) Husband of *Victoria, and from 1857 her prince consort. Born in Germany, he was the second son of the duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. He married Victoria in 1840 and had a profound influence on her; indeed his stern moral approach to life affected the whole of Victorian society. He was much concerned with the fields of industry and applied art, and the *Great Exhibition was largely his achievement. His sudden death from typhoid devastated the queen, whose subsequent years of protracted mourning made her increasingly unpopular.
