Kaaba - description of the shrine

In the eastern corner of the Ka'ba is the Black Stone. According to legend it was given to Adam when he was expelled from paradise. It was white then. Absorbing the sins of the pilgrims, who kiss and touch it, is what has turned it black.

The Ka'ba is covered in a great cloth of black brocade, made in Egypt and renewed each year. Woven into it, in gold thread, is the Muslim testament of faith: la allah ila Allah wa Muhammad rasul Allahi ('There is no god but God and Muhammad is his Messenger').
