(Archibald Percival Wavell, 1883–1950, KCB 1939, earl 1947) Commander of the British forces in the Middle East at the start of World War , from 1939 to 1941. After proving no match for Rommel, he was moved to the post of commander-in-chief in India (where he was subsequently viceroy, 1943–7).
