Unilever

|
Company formed in 1930 by a merger between Lever Brothers (founded by Lord *Leverhulme) and the Dutch firm Margarine Unie (the latter providing the first half of the new joint name). Their interests were complementary, because they had been competitors for the same raw materials; the British firm needed oils and fats for soap, the Dutch firm used them for margarine.

The resulting company, with headquarters in London and Rotterdam, expanded its two original concerns into a very wide range of cosmetic products and packaged foods and drink. Many of the best-known brand names in any British shopping basket are from the Unilever stable: Sunlight, Lux and Pears among soaps; Persil, Surf and Sun detergents; the Elizabeth Arden and Pond's cosmetics; Flora, Stork and Blue Band margarines; the Brooke Bond, Bird's Eye and Walls ranges of foods.
