Sutton Hoo Ship Burial
|
|
Anglo-Saxon treasure unearthed in 1939 at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. It had been placed in a great wooden ship within a barrow or burial mound. The date of the burial was about 625, and it is believed to have been the tomb of an Anglo-Saxon king; a leading candidate is Raedwald, who ruled much of England south of the Humber. The king was buried with numerous gold and silver items, several of them decorated with delicate cloisonné work. The collection was judged not to be *treasure trove and so belonged to Mrs Pretty, who owned the land and had organized the excavation. She very generously presented the entire hoard to the British Museum.
