Stephen Spender
|
|
(1909–95, kt 1983) Poet and critic who was in the left-wing circle around W.H. *Auden. Like Christopher *Isherwood he spent some years in Berlin during the 1930s. 'The Pylons' (in his first major collection, Poems 1933) was taken as the key example of the industrial imagery used by this group of anti-Fascist writers, and they were even known for a while as the Pylon poets; but elsewhere Spender's poetry tended to be more personal and less directly political than that of the others. In later life he concerned himself mainly with literary criticism.
