: or, the Mistakes of a Night (1773) Comedy by *Goldsmith about the courtship of Kate Hardcastle by young Marlow. When travelling to meet the young woman his father hopes he will marry, Marlow loses his way and asks at the Three Jolly Pigeons for lodgings in the district. He is directed to Kate's home by her oafish and mischievous half-brother, Tony Lumpkin. Marlow therefore treats Mr Hardcastle as the landlord of an inn and makes immediate advances to Kate, whom he takes for one of the servants. In the event this is fortunate. He is crippled by shyness with girls of his own class, but this disability is overcome by his being unaware that Kate is his intended and this the house where he was expected.
