Ryder Cup
|
|
The major international professional golf tournament for teams of male players. An informal match between an American and a British team took place at Wentworth in Surrey in 1926, and the following year an English seed merchant, Samuel Ryder, presented a gold cup for a biennial contest between teams from the USA and from Great Britain and Ireland (listed as separate countries only from 1973). By the end of the 1977 match the team from the British Isles had won only three times, so since 1979 the contest has been between the USA and Europe.
