Rumpole
|
|
Fictional barrister, created by John Mortimer, who combines two irresistible characteristics – he is both grumpy and warm-hearted. He defends the hopeless cases which no-one else will touch, while coping with rivalries in his chambers and the whims of his wife, 'she who must be obeyed' (see *She). Rumpole made his first appearance in a television play of 1976, was fleshed out in short stories (Rumpole of the Bailey 1978) and has featured since in a great many books and television series. He was created on television, in a perfect piece of casting, by Leo McKern.
