rococo
|
|
Delicate style in decoration and furniture, using a flutter of unpredictable curves to dissolve solid form and to give an impression of gaiety and lightness, which developed in France during the first half of the 18C as both a reaction against and an offshoot from the heavier and more florid *baroque. It arrived late in England, where it appealed particularly in the form of *chinoiserie. The earlier furniture of Thomas *Chippendale is the essence of English rococo, but even he changed in mid-career to the sterner demands of *neoclassicism.
