Rock of Ages
|
|
Hymn by Augustus Toplady (1740–78), which is believed in local tradition to have been inspired when he sheltered from a storm in the region of the *Cheddar Gorge. The theory relies on the opening couplet ('Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee') and on the fact that he was curate of nearby Blagdon (1762–4). It is possible; but the hymn was first published 11 years after the author had left Blagdon, and his rock of ages is Christ.
