Reform Club
|
|
(London SW1) A *club founded in 1832 by Whig supporters of the *Reform Act; it continued with the same political allegiance to become later the leading *Liberal club. Charles *Barry won the 1837 competition to design the building, as he had earlier with its neighbour in Pall Mall, the *Travellers'; he again produced an Italian Renaissance palace, in this case even larger and grander. In 1981 the Reform became the first of the old London clubs to admit women as members.
