Stamford Raffles

(1781–1826, kt 1817) Founder of *Singapore. Employed by the *East India Company, he was a model colonial administrator in the seriousness of his approach to local culture and traditions. His spell as governor of Java (1811–15) led to his authoritative History of Java (1817), and he was only later prevented from doing the same for Borneo and Sumatra through the loss by fire of his vast collection of notes and specimens during the journey home in 1824. His final efforts were on behalf of the *London Zoo, of which he was the first president.
