The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
|
|
(1961) Novel by Muriel Spark about the effect of an unusual schoolmistress on a group of teenage girls in the 1930s. Miss Brodie, well-meaning but deeply pretentious, is determined that the Brodie set shall follow her own example (she is now in her prime) and become 'the crème de la crème'. Unfortunately she is devoted to Italy and the splendid example of 'Mussolini and his fascisti' – an obsession which leads to her downfall. The story was filmed in 1969 with Maggie Smith as a perfect Jean Brodie.
