Possibly the most successful American musical of all time (lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe), earning a place in this encyclopedia through a strong British element. It was based on *Pygmalion and opened on Broadway in 1956 with Rex *Harrison, Julie *Andrews and Stanley *Holloway in the leading roles. They repeated them in London in 1958. The two men also starred in the film (1964), where the part of Eliza was taken by Audrey Hepburn.
