(21,000 in 1991) Administrative centre of Derbyshire, on the river Derwent. The town itself is at the entrance to the dramatic limestone ravine through which the river flows south past Matlock Bath (famous as a spa in the 19C) to *Cromford; on either side of the ravine are High Tor (on the left bank) and the wooded Heights of Abraham, said to have been named by a soldier who was with General *Wolfe at Quebec.
