Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
|
|
Village in Anglesey with an undisputed claim to the longest name in British topography. The name was probably introduced in the 19C as a tourist attraction, being Welsh for a phrase which seems more of an address than a place name: 'St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool of Llantysilio of the red cave'. Llanfairpwllgwyngyll or even just Llanfair P.G. are the commonly accepted abbreviations. The village had the distinction of forming the first *Women's Institute in Britain.
