(Glasgow) Named after a distinguished Scottish anatomist, William Hunter (1718–83), whose rich and varied treasures, bequeathed to the university of Glasgow, form its nucleus. Notable in particular for Hunter's coins, the collection is housed in the main university building. Opened in 1807, it is Scotland's oldest museum.
The art gallery is in a modern building (1980). Hunter had some exceptional paintings (including two by *Stubbs and three by *Chardin); to these have been added the estates of *Whistler (some 80 of his oil paintings and many prints and drawings) and of Charles Rennie *Mackintosh, four of whose interiors from his own house have been built into the new gallery. The *Hunterian Museum in London is the anatomical collection of William's younger brother.
