Knightshayes Court
|
|
(26km/16m N of Exeter) Victorian Gothic mansion built 1869–83 for the Heathcoat-Amory family, whose wealth derived from their lace factory at nearby Tiverton. The architect was William *Burges, but the extravagance of his proposed designs proved too daunting and most of the interiors were handed over to J.D. Crace (1838–1917). Knightshayes is best known now for its garden, originally laid out by Edward Kemp (1817–91) but greatly extended into the neighbouring woodlands after World War II by Sir John and Lady Amory.
