Great Universal Stores
|
|
(GUS) Major retailing company which has developed from a mail order firm, Universal Stores, established in Manchester in 1900 by George Rose. The upturn in its fortunes began when an employee, Isaac Wolfson (1897–1991), bought out Rose in 1932; GUS has been since then in the control of the Wolfson family. Mail order remains its central business, with many illustrated catalogues (of which Kays is the most important) published each year.
