(William Gilbert Grace, 1848–1915) The best-known player in the history of *cricket, immediately recognizable in photographs with his thick moustache and chunky beard. He was a qualified doctor but cricket was his life, and he did more than anyone to make it popular. His team was Gloucestershire, which he captained 1870–98; he played for England 1880–99 and was captain 1888–99. In a career in first-class cricket spanning 1865–1908, he scored 54,896 runs (including 126 centuries) and took 2876 wickets.
