John Gay
|
|
(1685–1732) Poet and playwright, remembered in particular for one outstanding success, The *Beggar's Opera. His reputation was high enough for him to be buried in *Westminster Abbey, where the epitaph which he wrote for himself suggests his easy and cynical wit: Life is a jest; and all things show it. I thought so once; but now I know it.
