Florence Court
|
|
(13km/8m SW of Enniskillen) House built 1756–64 by John Cole, probably to his own design; he named it Florence after his mother. The stone central block is flanked by colonnades leading to pavilions. The interior, famous for its delicate rococo plasterwork, was much damaged by fire in 1955 but has been restored. The park was landscaped in about 1778–80 by William King, in the informal manner of Capability *Brown. Nearby is the original Florence Court yew, still living, which in the 18C was discovered to have an upright rather than a spreading habit. This characteristic survives if propagated by cuttings (but reverts to normal if planted as a seed), and the tree now grows throughout Ireland.
