Epsom
|
|
(64,000 in 1991) Town in Surrey, famous for the racecourse (with its sharp left-hand turn at Tattenham Corner) which is home to the *Oaks and the *Derby. Epsom became a resort after the discovery in about 1618 of mineral springs (from which Epsom salts, used originally as a laxative, were extracted by evaporation). Racing had become a permanent feature by 1730.
