Crichton Castle
|
|
(24km/15m SE of Edinburgh) Ruined castle (14–16C) set in rolling open country and notable for an Italianate interior courtyard with a façade of diamond-shaped blocks above an arcade. This feature was the result of a visit to Italy in the 1570s by the 5th earl of Bothwell, whose uncle had been the husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
