Barbados

Member of the *Commonwealth since independence in 1966. The most easterly island of the West Indies, it was settled in 1627 by a British group led by Henry Powell. The early prosperity of the island was based on the production of sugar cane by slave labour, until the abolition of *slavery in 1834. Barbados became a separate independent state four years after the break-up of the *West Indies Federation.
