Country Life

Weekly magazine founded in 1897 as a revival of Racing Illustrated. It aimed to follow its predecessor in making the most of new technology for printing black-and-white photographs, but with more varied country interests. Within a few years it had found its most distinctive theme – serious and well illustrated architectural studies of buildings, particularly country houses. Its other famous feature over many decades has been the frontispiece black-and-white portrait of a society bride-to-be, smiling at the camera and almost invariably wearing pearls; the last picture of this kind appeared in 1991, being subsequently replaced by colour photographs of a wider range of aristocrats.
